Michael L. Davis
Michael L. Davis is Executive Vice President, Global Human Resources at General Mills, Inc., with responsibility for all human resource functions at General Mills. In that capacity, he has senior management oversight for the company's Corporate Aviation and Global Health Services groups. Previously, he was Vice President, Human Resources, U.S. Retail and Corporate for three years, and prior to that he served for nine years as Vice President, Compensation & Benefits.
Mr. Davis serves as Chair of the AHPI Board of Governors. He was instrumental in helping found the Institute under the HR Policy Foundation, and he now plays a significant role guiding the Institute's program of work and advising on key questions regarding the impact of health care policy on private sector employers.
Before joining General Mills, Mr. Davis worked for fifteen years as a compensation consultant with Towers Perrin. During these years he worked in Chicago, New York and Minneapolis with leadership roles in each of these locations. When he left Towers Perrin in 1996, he was the firm's worldwide practice leader for executive compensation and an active Board executive compensation consultant.
Mr. Davis is a frequent speaker and author on executive and director compensation and benefits issues. He has served on four National Association of Corporate Director Blue Ribbon Commissions on the Compensation Committee, Director and CEO Performance Evaluation, Director Compensation, and Director Professionalism. He has been interviewed or quoted in Fortune, Business Week, Newsweek, Time, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times on various human resources matters.
For the last six years Mr. Davis has also been an adjunct professor teaching compensation & benefits and executive compensation in the graduate human resources program at the Carlson School of Management at University of Minnesota. The student body has awarded him their coveted "Herbie Award," which is their Influential Teacher of the Year award.
Mr. Davis is active in a number of different industry trade groups serving in leadership roles on a range of boards and committees. Groups he has worked with include:
- HR Policy Association, serving as Vice Chairman and helping launch its Center on Executive Compensation;
- The Employee Benefits Research Institute (EBRI), where he currently serves as Chairman of its Board of Directors;
- The National Committee for Quality Assurance, where he currently serves on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors;
- The National Business Group on Health, where he was a Director for twelve years and served for several as Chairman of the Board; there he was instrumental in forming several sub-organizations within NBGH that focused on corporate health care cost containment and another that focused on workplace wellness strategies, and where he received NBGH's highest honor, their annual award for Excellence and Innovation in Health Care Value Purchasing.
Mr. Davis has two undergraduate degrees from Purdue University in Industrial Management and Computer Science and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago; he is also a Certified Public Accountant.
